THE APARTMENT
Simplicity and Dematerialization.
In 2014, a couple, whose children had already moved out, consulted us about the possibilities of an apartment they were considering purchasing in the Raval district. The apartment needed a complete renovation, but above all, they wanted to know if it could be transformed into a space that would meet their needs.
The distribution proposal arose from the “functional needs” of the future owners and from understanding their own conception of home: an open and bright space to enjoy with friends.
Originally, the apartment was divided into many tiny rooms, with the kitchen at the back. Fortunately, there were no load-bearing walls, so we tore everything down: walls, doors, floors, and ceilings. The project was to create an open space that would seamlessly unite the living room, dining room, and kitchen into one continuous whole. We even linked the extension of the rectangle, occasionally separating it with movable bookshelves. We wanted the rooms to communicate with each other and appear visually uniform.
We helped achieve this by placing continuous wooden flooring. The same floor throughout the entire apartment. White walls.
The result: a soft and discreet setting where a peaceful order prevails.
The master bedroom was conceived as an en-suite bedroom, while the extension of the rectangle, separated by sliding bookshelves, functions as a “study” and, occasionally, as a “guest bedroom” for the children who no longer live permanently in Barcelona.
In an apartment of modest square footage, the goal was a carefully considered arrangement of multifunctional and well-proportioned spaces that maximize the functional possibilities, creating a home of compact size but enormous potential.
